Crit Care Med 2010; 38:954-962. This well executed meta-Analysis combined five RCTs evaluating the efficacy of probiotics on ventilator-Associated pneumonia. The authors conclude that although limited by heterogeneity in study designs and outcome measures, probiotics have a meaningful effect on rates of pneumonia.

[Accessed 23 October 2011] The AHRQ commissioned this systematic review regarding the safety of probiotic agents used in clinical trials. Although the study found that probiotics are generally well tolerared, there are serious limitations to current monitoring and reporting of adverse events, underscoring the significance of the PROPATRIA study.
