Compound 3 i is relatively unstable and undergoes normal Beckmann rearrangement (to the corresponding amide) slowly at room temperature. Compound 3 f is stable to the reaction conditions in the absence of palladium; this implicates a Pd-mediated Beckmann rearrangement pathway in this case.
