In the field of the law of obligations, however, the Nizamat courts applied the Mejella or Mejelat al-Ahkam al-Adleiah which was predominantly a codification of the legal rules set forth in the Hanafia treatises. Although the Mejella is purely Islamic in its substance, its form is seen as a departure from the traditional Shari'a books towards a Western form. Thus it is true to say that the Mejella "was of outstanding importance... namely, that it represented the first example in history of a codification of principles derived from the Shari'a but enacted as law by a human legislature", see, supra n. 1
