Endothelium-dependent relaxation competes with alpha 1 - And alpha 2- adrenergic activation in the canine coronary microcirculation
-
Jones CJH, DeFily DV, Patterson JL, Chilian WM. Endothelium-dependent relaxation competes with alpha 1 - and alpha 2- adrenergic activation in the canine coronary microcirculation. Circulation 1993; 87: 1264-1274. Coronary microvascular diameters were measured during fluorescein microangiography in twenty open-chested dogs. Baseline functional responses to selective alpha 1-adrenergic activation predominated in small arteries (vessel diameter 100-300 βm) and those to alpha 2-adrenergic activation predominated in arterioles (vessel diameter < 100 βm). Coronary microvascular constriction caused by both alpha 1 - and alpha 2-adrenergic receptor activation was markedly potentiated by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase activity, implying that alpha-adrenergic activation has considerable importance on coronary microvascular resistance in situations when coronary endothelial function is impaired.

Preconditioning with ischemia: A delay of lethal cell injury in ischemic myocardium
-
Murry C, Jennings R, Reimer K. Preconditioning with ischemia: a delay of lethal cell injury in ischemic myocardium. Circulation 1986; 74:1124-1136. One group of dogs (n=7) was preconditioned with repetitive coronary occlusions, followed by a sustained 40-min occlusion. The control group (n=5) received a single 40-min occlusion. Histologic infarct size was measured and related to the major baseline predictors of infarct size, including the anatomic area at risk and collateral blood flow. Preconditioning with ischemia limited infarct size to 25% of that seen in the control group.
