    • Relationships between centralized rulers and private holders of important resources were often based on short-term considerations and temporary alliances rather than longer term forms of loyalty or legal norms. Weber's assumption of a linear trajectory from medieval kingdom to modern statehood is an ideal-type construct, and the historical evidence suggests that societies experienced numerous expansions and contractions of centralized rule throughout the early modern period. By the end of the eighteenth century approximately 70 percent of the Brandenburg nobility and 60 percent of the East Prussian nobility were either active or former officers. • Traditional analyses contend that the creation of the canton system led to a "strict militarization" of Prussian society. See Otto Busch, Military System and Social Life in Old Regime Prussia, 1713-1807: The Beginnings of the Social Militarization of Prusso-German Society, trans, by J. G. • There were earlier conflicts between magnate elites and the lesser nobility over questions regarding the kingdom's financial and judicial systems and the laws governing the possession of property. Wealthy magnates, who held offices in the royal administration and had acquired their wealth and power by managing royal demesnes that had been leased or granted to them by the Polish king, wanted the authority over the royal lands to be inheritable, while representatives of the lesser nobility advocated for those lands to be turned back to the royal household following a nobleman's death. The establishment of the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth in 1569 exacerbated tensions and brought Lithuanian nobles into the conflict over the structure and scope of the state and the privileges of the nobility.
