Note
-
For Gramsci culture was the exercise of thought and the habit of connecting causes and effects. Thus, everybody was cultured in some way or another because each person thinks. Gramsci believed that "common sense" -rooted in popular knowledge- was an agglomerate of different conceptions of the world, traditions, and beliefs that are constantly changing. He argued that in order to effectively develop class consciousness in opposition to dominant hegemonic conceptions, it is the responsibility of "organic" intellectuals to foster sophisticated reflection to critique the "common" in order to cultivate what Gramsci refers to as "good sense."
