The authors evaluated 50 consecutive TAO patients and found an 8% seropositivity for acetylcholine receptors but, most importantly, found that this seropositivity was not associated with development of myasthenia in any case.

Am J Ophthalmol 1995, 120:613-621. The authors stressed the importance of follow-up and biopsy to establish the diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis even when antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies are negative. In addition, atypical presentations were reviewed.

The authors identified lens opacities in two-thirds of neurofibromatosis 2 patients. The presence of a cataract in a person less than 30 years old warrants investigation for other stigmata of neurofibromatosis.

Predicting clinical response to immunosuppression is an important goal. These authors demonstrated that T2 relaxation time is a predictive MR characteristic.
16. Polito E, Leccisotti A: MRI in Graves' orbitopathy: recognition of enlarged muscles and prediction of steroid response. Ophthalmologia 1995, 209:182-186. With the advent of new and more expensive imaging techniques, studies like this one are essential. The authors found CT to be superior to MRI in identifying enlarged extraocular muscles and found that clinical signs were more predictive of clinical response than orbital imaging.

18. Rubin PAD, Bilyk JR, Dunya IM, Weber AL: Spiral CT of an orbital venous malformation. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1995, 16:1255-1257. The authors described an exciting new technique that allows fast and accurate imaging of children and dynamic orbital abnormalities.
19. Wilms G, Raat H, Thywissen C, Demaerel P, Dralands G, Baert AL: Orbital cavernous hemangioma: findings on sequential Gd-enhanced MRI. J Comput Assist Tomogr 1995, 19:548-551. Cavernous hemangiomas are common orbital tumors ideally distinguished from other more malignant lesions (e.g. hemangiopericytomas) before management decisions are made. Other lesions will need to be studied with this technique to determine the specificity.

21. Ho VT, McGuckin JF, Smergel EM: Intraorbital wooden foreign body: CT and MR appearance. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1996, 17:134-136. This article is the clinical correlate of the McGuckin in-vitro model. Both articles demonstrate that CT scanning remains the initial procedure of choice in patients with orbital foreign bodies, independent of the suspected content.

In this extensive review of the presence of orbital calcification, the authors clearly demonstrated that calcification of the recti insertions, trochlea, optic nerve head and surrounding the proximal nerve are variations of normal anatomy.

30. Golnik KC, Hund PW, Stroman GA, Stewart WC: Magnetic resonance imaging in patients with unexplained optic neuropathy. Ophthalmology 1996, 103:515-519. As imaging techniques improve, the relationship of vascular structures to the visual pathways is elucidated. These authors proposed that proximity of the ICA to the optic nerve is sufficient to result in a compressive optic neuropathy.

The authors challenged the commonly held view that orbital pseudotumor is sterois sensitive and demonstrated a high rate of recurrence analogous to uveitis.

39. Bartley GB, Fatourechi V, Kadrmas EF, Jacobsen SJ, Ilstrup DM, Garrity JA, Gorman CA: The treatment of Graves' ophthalmopathy in an incidence cohort. Am J Ophthalmol 1996, 121:200-206. The authors of this review of 120 patients demonstrated that conservative therapy is usually effective and suggested that older patients are more likely to need surgery but that gender and smoking history do not influence the rate of intervention.

41. Metson R, Shore JW, Gliklich RE, Dallow RL: Endoscopic orbital decompression under local anesthesia. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1995, 113:661-667. An interesting article promoting local anesthesia as a safe alternative to general endotracheal intubation in patients undergoing decompression.
42. Khan JA, Doane JF, Whitacre MM: Does decompression diminish the discomfort of severe dysthyroid orbitopathy? Ophthal Plast Reconstr Surg 1995, 11:109-112. The authors presented the subjective discomfort associated with dysthyroid orbitopathy in an interesting fashion and suggested that decompression might allow alleviation.
43. Hayes BH, Shore JW, Westfall CT, Harris GJ: Management of orbital and periorbital arteriovenous malformations. Ophthalmic Surg 1995, 26:145-152. The authors discussed successful intervention techniques in these challenging orbital lesions.
44. Sugarman HJ, Felton WL, Salvant JB, Sismanis A, Kellum JM: Effects of surgically induced weight loss on idiopathic intracranial hypertension in morbid obesity. Neurology 1995, 45:1655-1659. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension often resolves spontaneously and can be managed with oral Diamox (Storz, Gosport). This article described an alternative, effective management option for patients with persistent symptoms.
45. Powell M: Recovery of vision following transphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenomas. Br J Neurosurg 1995, 9:367-373. The author stressed the effectiveness of the transphenoidal approach.
