Russia Braces for Terrorism's Return as 38 Die in Subway Bombings, March 30, (accessed May 2011)
-
The 2010 Moscow subway bombing provides a vivid contrast: None of the newspapers or counterterrorism blogscited in this study depicted the victims of the 2010 Moscow subway bombing as "resilient." In fact, Philip P. Pan, a Washington Post reporter, instead stated, "The militants have proven resilient, staging a string of assassinations, bombings and suicide attacks in the last year." See "Russia Braces for Terrorism's Return as 38 Die in Subway Bombings," Washington Post, March 30, 2010, http://www. washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/29/AR2010032900007.html (accessed May 2011).

Medvedev: 'More cruel' tactics in terror fight
-
April 1, (accessed May 2011)
-
Here, we might consider how the absence of a discourse of resilience as depicted within mainstream media accounts influenced Russian leaders' rhetorical responses to the 2010 Moscow subway bombings. President Dmitry Medvedev told police and security forces to use "more cruel" measures to fight the "scum" responsible for terrorist attacks. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin vowed to "drag out of the sewer" the masterminds behind the attacks. How are management fashions institutionalized? the role of institutional work
-
"Discourse" is a term used in different ways by different scholars and thus is not easily characterized. Here, we use the term to refer to "bodies of talk and text which constitute a particular practice as popular, important and widely applicable," from Markus Perckmann and Andre Spicer, "How Are Management Fashions Institutionalized? The Role of Institutional Work," Human Relations 61 (2008): 811-44, 812. Similarly, sociolinguists Jaworski and Coupland state: "Discourse is language use relative to social, political and cultural formations-it is language reflecting social order but also language shaping social order, and shaping individuals' interactions with society.

A richer description and example of how CRA maps the relationships between terms of influence in the Declaration of Independence, and consult the following explanations and examples: Kevin Dooley and Steven R. Corman, Cresskill, NJ: Hampton Press
-
Centering resonance analysis (CRA) is a computer-based data-mining algorithm developed by researchers at the University of Arizona to aid in the analysis of large-scale,complex discursive systems. CRA operates by locating noun phrases or "centers" that give meaning to utterances, and then mapping the centers' influence by probing the relationships between those centers and other phrases in the utterance. After the data are cleaned, they are run through the proprietary Crawdad Text Analysis Soft ware, which identifies key noun phrases and maps their relationship to other terms of influence. Thus, CRA transforms raw textual data streams into a visual network of relationships that can, if the researchers so choose, be mathematically represented and analyzed. According to its creators on the website referenced below, "CRA is different from traditional [computerized text analysis] methods based on word frequency, such as latent semantic analysis, because it uses grammatical rules to understand how words are being used in context. Whereas word frequency methods create insight based on a 'pile of words,' CRA creates insight through applying network analysis." See http://www.crawdadtech.com/for a richer description and example of how CRA maps the relationships between terms of influence in the Declaration of Independence, and consult the following explanations and examples: Kevin Dooley and Steven R. Corman, "The Dynamics of Electronic Media Coverage," in Communication and Terrorism: Public and Media Responses to 9-11, ed. Bradley S. Greenberg (Cresskill, NJ: Hampton Press, 2002), 121-36
