20. Gillick competence is the English term used in medical law to identify minors (under the age of 16) who are judged competent to consent to their own medical treatment. The standard is based on a decision of the House of Lords in the case Gillick v West Norfolk and Wisbech Area Health Authority and is binding in England and has been approved in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
