    • In several publications it is assumed that the high-temperature phase of LTO presents the Cmcm space group, and the literature is cited for experimental proof of this fact. However, we have carefully checked the literature and were unable to find any results concerning the crystal structure of LTO's PE phase

    • Usually, the lowest-order coupling term between two modes v and w with different symmetries is of the form u2w2; the modes compete if the coefficient for this term is positive and cooperate if it is negative. In the case of two isosymmetric modes, we also have terms of the form uw3 and u3w, which result in a cooperation between the modes irrespective of the sign of the associated coefficient. It is thus tempting to conclude that two isosymmetric modes always cooperate. One should not forget, though, that the magnitude of such coefficients will be small (and the positive coefficient of the u2w2 term will be large) if the two isosymmetric distortions are incompatible for whichever chemical or physical reason. Indeed, only physical and chemical mechanisms, and not symmetry, can lead to meaningful competition or cooperation between modes

    • Comparing our results for the spontaneous polarization with those of Ref. is not straightforward, for two reasons. First, the authors of Ref. used a generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) to DFT. As compared with the LDA employed in this work, GGA is known to overestimate the structural distortion and spontaneous polarization in the usual FE perovskites - see, e.g. PRBMDO 1098-0121 10.1103/PhysRevB.77.165107
