    • In 1995, the city of Atlanta recorded 69, 011 crimes; in 2006, it recorded 39, 779 crimes. During the same period, the city's population increased from 404, 337 to 485, 804 persons, causing the crime index per 10, 000 persons to decrease from 1, 707 to 818, or by 52 percent. Crime statistics were derived from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Uniform Crime Reports (www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm).
