    • The Tudor ship the Mary Rose sank in the Solent near Portsmouth in 1545, was excavated in the early 1980s, and then lifted from the seabed in 1982. Sixty million spectators worldwide watched this event on television. Since then, the vessel has moved to the Naval Dockyards in Portsmouth, where 4 million people have visited the ship's hull, presently undergoing conservation, and its artefacts, which are on display in the adjoining museum.
