1. Estimates of income distribution are soft everywhere and certainly in South Africa. Thus we cannot be certain that South African income distribution is the worst among middle-income countries, but it may well be.
2. These estimates are vulnerable to underreporting, but they convey what is usually found when the incidence of poverty by population group is investigated.
3. These estimates are in 2005 prices. The GNI data come from the SA Reserve Bank historical macroeconomic series and the population estimates from the World Bank.
4. According to the 2008 General Household Survey, 98.1 percent attend school as the law demands. Grades 1 through 9 constitute general education.
5. These statistics are taken from the National Treasury's 2010 budget review.
6. About ten years ago, Statistics South Africa abolished the distinction between urban and rural in its collection of data, so no more up-to-date figures are available.
