    • Note
    • The Republic of Mauritius consists of not only the eponymous main island, which is just over 2,000 kilometers square and lies 900 kilometers due east of Madagascar, but also the island of Rodrigues plus two smaller atolls (Agalega and Saint Brandon). Mauritius also had territorial control over the Chagos Archipelago, but Britain bought this group of islands in 1965. Mauritius is still trying to regain sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, which has become an important U.S. air, naval, and communications base.
