    • Using polarization microscopy, we could observe a monotropic liquid crystalline phase far below the respective melting point of the 5-(4-alkylphenyl)isatin homologues with an alkyl chain of octyl or longer. This phase could not be caught by DSC due to preceding recrystallization.
