Using polarization microscopy, we could observe a monotropic liquid crystalline phase far below the respective melting point of the 5-(4-alkylphenyl)isatin homologues with an alkyl chain of octyl or longer. This phase could not be caught by DSC due to preceding recrystallization.

Unsubstituted isatin and several derivatives form dimers in their crystals. Some halogen substituted isatin derivatives form molecular chains of a different type, in which the amide hydrogen bond is linked to the oxygen atom of the 3-carbonyl group.
