    • The Urban Redevelopment Program was created by the National Housing Act of 1949 (P. L. 81-71). The program funded slum clearance and redevelopment and the construction of public housing for those displaced by slum clearance. When those activities were expanded under the Housing Act of 1954, they were titled "urban renewal." Further expansion of urban renewal occurred with the passage of the Housing Act of 1959.

    • In 1944, Congress passed the GI Bill which, among other things, authorized mortgage guarantees through the Veterans Administration, helping to fuel a housing boom. Although the interstate highway system began to form in the 1930s, the nationwide freeway construction boom began after Congress passed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, which called for more than 41, 000 miles of highways that would be 90 percent funded by the federal government.
