But comparing notions from the middle of the 19th century mathematics (Gauss died in 1855) with today's physics contains several sources of possible misunderstandings: The word topology (in German, Topologie) was already in use, but without a strict definition. A Riemannian space was only considered as a certain subset of a higher-dimensional Euclidean space, whereas today, a (pseudo)-Riemannian space has its own intrinsic definition, and only as curiosity or to help simplify equations, e.g. in the search for exact solutions, it will be noted what the embedding class of it may be. 10.1063/1.1665613
