    • Canberra, Butlin's estimates are challenged by G. J. R. Linge, Industrial Awakening: A Geography of Australian Manufacturing 1788 to 1890, Canberra, 1979, 712-5. linge places the percentage of the Queensland population engaged in manufacturing at 8.8 per cent, compared to 10.6 per cent for Victoria and 12 per cent for New South Wales. Much of the difficulty in calculating the percentage of the Queensland population relates to the unsatisfactory nature of the Queensland census data. Not only was factory employment calculated on a different basis from that used in southern colonies, but the criteria used in Queensland itself was continually changed. Linge notes that 'it is impossible to reorganise satisfactorily the published data from the 1861,1871 and 1881 censuses
