Comparison of changes in bone density and turnover with abacavir-lamivudine versus tenofovir-emtricitabine in HIV-infected adults: 48-week results from the ASSERT study
-
A randomized study that shows yet again, greater bone loss of 2.4-3.6% at hip and spine, for those randomized to the tenofovir/emtricitabine arm. This study also found predictors for greater bone loss were lower baseline body mass index, non- Black race and age greater than 45 years. It is the first study to examine markers of bone turnover, showing markers of bone resorption and bone formation both increase by week 12 after initiation of ART
