6. It is acknowledged that the term archive is complex, contested, and unstable. In the words of Jacques Derrida, "Nothing is less reliable, less clear today than the word archive," Archive Fever (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996), 90. Indeed, the advent of digital archives has only accentuated the unreliability of our terminology. All the more reason, therefore, for us to articulate and assert our meanings with clarity, while at the same time acknowledging the contested nature of the semantic and political terrain.
