The DNPI is headed by Alexander Potkin, who uses the pseudonym "Belov." Potkin was once press secretary for the Pamyat National Patriotic Front and, according to the SOVA Center's Galina Kozhenikova, has become the most sought-after public speaker among the hard-line nationalists, 25 February, (accessed 15 June 2008)

Viktor Yasmann, citing an article in Stringer (1 May 2003), has written that Dugin became interested in the European right when his father secured a job for him at one of the Russian intelligence agencies in the 1970s. According to this account, Dugin worked with classified files on theoreticians of Italian and German fascism. The papers had been seized by Soviet troops during and after World War II. Dugin also reportedly had access to files on the Russian émigré Eurasianists of the 1920s. It was at this time that he developed an interest in mysticism, paganism, and fascism.
