It must be pointed out that recent work (see the following references) has shown a gravity-induced isotropic/nematic transition in high-charge synthetic fluorohectorite, an octahedrally substituted clay mineral. However, the transition involves stacks of platelets rather than individual layers, and the situation is then different from the one analyzed in the present paper
