    • And yet B. Beckheuer, Paulus und Jerusalem: Kollekte und Mission im theologischen Denken des Heidenapostels (EHS.T 611; Frankfurt a.M. etc.: Lang, 1997) 86, and Joubert, Paul as Benefactor, 89 (cf. 103) argue that the aorist ejspouvdasa means that Paul is still fully involved in raising the collection at the time of writing Galatians; this seems to make remarkably little sense of the choice of tense here (as opposed to either the present or the perfect).

    • It is not said that the 'poor' were those of the Jerusalem church, although most assume that they were meant here; cf., however, the views of V. Bartlet ('"Only Let Us Be Mindful of the Poor": Gal 2.10', The Expositor 9 [1899] 218-55) as noted by Vouga, An die Galater, 49.

    • Doubts about partition theories have recently been expressed by T. Engberg-Pedersen, Paul and the Stoics (Edinburgh: Clark, 2000) ch. 4, who rightly remarks that such theories enjoy more support in German-speaking scholarship than in English-speaking (see, however, Schnelle, Einleitung, 150-3 and his far from unreasonable scepticism about such theories in general on pp. 86-8); on the other hand Engberg-Pedersen does regard Ephesus as the likeliest place of composition.

    • So the majority reading, but cf. the 'Western' reading Doubevrio: Dvid itd, gig. At first sight it might seem that the reference to the far better known Derbe has replaced the obscure Doberus, but if a shrewd scribe or editor read 19.29 and assumed that it was the same Gaius who was there labelled a Macedonian, then it is possible that he searched for a Macedonian place-name whose adjectival form sounded similar; such erudition is not uncharacteristic of a number of the 'Western' readings. Then, however, there is the question whether the reference is to the Macedonian town or to the people of the Doberes, located in the region near Mt Pangaeus according to Hdt 7.113 (cf. again Thornton, Der Zeuge des Zeugen, 256-7).
