It may be criticized for not being very highly powered (108 consecutive patients), but is still credible. Results between the two techniques were found to be comparable. Visual acuity, postoperative corneal edema, astigmatism, PCO, and cost are mentioned in the article.

One hundred and two consecutive SICS cases on brunescent and black cataracts performed at Aravind Eye Hospital in India, with BCVA 6/18 or better in 97% of cases. 70% of cases were performed through temporal scleral incisions, and 30% performed through superior scleral incisions, with higher average postoperative astigmatism in the superior-incision group.

Retrospective review of endophthalmitis cases from all cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification, large-incision ECCE, and SICS) performed over 18 months at Aravind Eye Hospital in India, including cases both by surgeons-in-training and by staff surgeons. Although endophthalmitis was overall low with both techniques, rates were higher with SICS than with phacoemulsification - a fact which may be partly attributed to most SICS cases being sutureless.

Seventy-four percent of facilities that trained residents began cataract surgery training with phacoemulsification, not manual ECCE.
