A prospective randomized clinical trial of phacoemulsification vs manual sutureless small-incision extracapsular cataract surgery in Nepal
-
Older but seminal article comparing phacoemulsification to SICS, each performed by surgeons experienced in that technique. It may be criticized for not being very highly powered 108 consecutive patients, but is still credible. Results between the two techniques were found to be comparable. Visual acuity, postoperative corneal edema, astigmatism, PCO, and cost are mentioned in the article

Incidence of postcataract endophthalmitis at Aravind Eye Hospital: Outcomes of more than 42, 000 consecutive cases using standardized sterilization and prophylaxis protocols
-
Retrospective review of endophthalmitis cases from all cataract surgeries phacoemulsification, large-incision ECCE, and SICSperformed over 18 months at Aravind Eye Hospital in India, including cases both by surgeons-in-training and by staff surgeons. Although endophthalmitis was overall low with both techniques, rates were higher with SICS than with phacoemulsification - a fact which may be partly attributed to most SICS cases being sutureless

Ravindran RD, Venkatesh R, Chang DF, et al. Incidence of postcataract endophthalmitis at Aravind Eye Hospital: outcomes of more than 42, 000 consecutive cases using standardized sterilization and prophylaxis protocols. J Cataract Refract Surg 2009;35:629-636. Retrospective review of endophthalmitis cases from all cataract surgeries (phacoemulsification, large-incision ECCE, and SICS) performed over 18 months at Aravind Eye Hospital in India, including cases both by surgeons-in-training and by staff surgeons. Although endophthalmitis was overall low with both techniques, rates were higher with SICS than with phacoemulsification - a fact which may be partly attributed to most SICS cases being sutureless.

A survey of the current role of manual extracapsular cataract extraction
-
Survey of 88 Veterans Affairs eye departments, with 42% response rate. Seventy-two percent performed manual ECCE on an average of approximately 2% of all cataract cases. Primary cited reasons for performing were dense cataracts 81%, conversion from phacoemulsification 18%, zonular instability 16%, and resident training 10%. Seventy-four percent of facilities that trained residents began cataract surgery training with phacoemulsification, not manual ECCE
