30. Yudhoyono cited his state visit to the Netherlands as the reason for skipping ASEM. However, he cancelled his visit at the last moment, citing "national dignity" after a separatist group, Republic of the South Moluccas (Republic Maluku Selatan, RMS), consisting mostly of Hollandbased Moluccans, called for his arrest by filing a lawsuit that accused him of human rights abuses.

32. In late October, Indonesia was hit by near-simultaneous natural disasters in separate parts of the country. On October 25, a tsunami resulting from a large earthquake off the western coast of Sumatra claimed over 400 lives, left another 163 unaccounted for, and displaced over 20,000 people. The volcanic eruptions of Mt. Merapi on Java began around the same time and continued sporadically for several days, resulting in a death toll of about 324 people and displacing over 16,000.
