    • Synthesis of compound 1: Phenanthrene-9-carbonitrile (0.203 g, 1.0 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) was slowly added to the pale-yellow solution of CuI (0.190 g, 1.0 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) with magnetic stirring. The reaction mixture was stirred 4 hour at room temperature. The resulting yellow solution was allowed to stand in air at room temperature for 5 days, yielding pale yellow crystals (56% yield). Element analysis for 1 C15H9CuIN, calcd: C, 45.76; H, 2.30, N, 3.56%. Found: C, 45.84; H, 2.36; N, 3.49%. IR data (KBr, cm-1): 425w, 3055w, 3013w, 2230 m, 1930w, 1809w, 1708w, 1611 m, 1523w, 1492w, 1446 s, 1385w, 1385w, 1244w, 1219w, 1162w, 1055w, 950w, 884 m, 858w, 785w, 753 s, 719 s, 618w, 510w, 470w, 442w.

Element analysis for 1 C15H9Cu2I2N, calcd: C, 30.84; H, 1.55; N, 2.40%. Found: C, 30.99; H, 1.50; N, 2.34%.
