Synthesis of compound 1: Phenanthrene-9-carbonitrile (0.203 g, 1.0 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) was slowly added to the pale-yellow solution of CuI (0.190 g, 1.0 mmol) in acetonitrile (20 ml) with magnetic stirring. The reaction mixture was stirred 4 hour at room temperature. The resulting yellow solution was allowed to stand in air at room temperature for 5 days, yielding pale yellow crystals (56% yield). Element analysis for 1 C15H9CuIN, calcd: C, 45.76; H, 2.30, N, 3.56%. Found: C, 45.84; H, 2.36; N, 3.49%. IR data (KBr, cm-1): 425w, 3055w, 3013w, 2230 m, 1930w, 1809w, 1708w, 1611 m, 1523w, 1492w, 1446 s, 1385w, 1385w, 1244w, 1219w, 1162w, 1055w, 950w, 884 m, 858w, 785w, 753 s, 719 s, 618w, 510w, 470w, 442w.
