In the discussion hereafter, capacitance will be understood to refer to the circuit (and the physical system it represents) as a whole, and so E refers to the applied voltage. As shall be demonstrated, this circuit capacitance equals C at zero current.

We are conscious of the possible confusion with the imaginary unit j in other parts of the manuscript and its Supporting Information and therefore consistently "cap" as a subscript when current is being discussed.
