In the protocol discussed in these papers, an inhomogeneously broadened medium is used and the single-photon pulse is not stored in a symmetric, phased state. Nevertheless, by using an echo-like sequence, a faithful replica of the input pulse can be generated. The pulse emerges from the sample in a direction opposite to that of the input pulse.
