Attitudes to European Parliamentary institutions are part of a syndrome of attitudes toward democratic institutions in general. Those who think little of such institutions are less likely to vote in any elections, not just elections to the European Parliament van der Eijk and Oppenhuis 1990; van der Eijk and Schmitt 1991. If the only indicator of this syndrome included in an analysis is one that measures attitudes to European institutions, then it is attitudes to Europe that appear to play a role
