Compounds 1 and 2 were isolated by mixing Cu(NO3)2·6H2O (0.2 mmol), bpmp (or bpe) (0.2 mmol), H2mip (0.2 mmol), and NaOH (0.4 mmol) in 8 ml water and stirred for 30 min in air. Then the mixture was transferred to 25 mL stainless-steel reactors with Teflon liner and heated to 120 °C in 3 hours. The temperature was kept at 120 °C for 3 days and cooled to room temperature during 24 hours. Green rod crystals of both 1 and 2 were isolated by filtration, washed with distilled water, and dried in air (yield based on Cu: 59% and 67% for 1-2, respectively). For 1, Anal. Calcd. C17H18N2O5Cu (393.89): C 51.84, H 4.61, N 7.11; found: C 51.78, H 4.57, N 7.23. C15H12N1O4Cu (333.81): C 53.97, H 3.62, N 4.20; found: C 53.88, H 3.65, N 4.24. 2 = 0.0894. X-ray single crystal diffraction data collections of 1-2 were performed on a Rigaku Mercury CCD. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined with full-matrix least-squares technique (SHELXTL-97) [14]. All non-hydrogen atoms were treated anisotropically. The positions of the hydrogen atoms attached to carbon atoms were generated geometrically. The idealized positions of the H atoms of water molecules were located from Fourier difference maps and refined isotropically (O-H bond fixed at 0.85 A°).
