Cavitation is the result of changes of water pressure around an object as it passes through the water. Cavitation first occurs at the tips of propeller blades as the speed of a vessel increases. It can be a dead giveaway, particularly with older submarines as they increase in speed in an effort to escape a searching vessel. Improved propeller designs have reduced cavitation noise.
