He did not follow Croll's demonstration, in Climate and Time in their geological relations (Black, Edinburgh, 1875), of repeated glaciations, arguing from geological evidence that the period of extreme cold lasted from 15 00025 000 years ago and that this gave pre-glacial Palaeolithic man an antiquity of between 25 000 and 30 000 years. But by then he was supporting the eolith discoveries of Kent and East Anglia in a second and completely fruitless debate over the antiquity of man (J. McNabb, note 67).
