    • In principle, such a time gate is not needed if the intrinsic temporal resolution of the photon detector is sufficiently high to meet the single-mode measurement condition. For the heralding setup under consideration, however, we need T = 9 ps to achieve a heralding efficiency H = 0. 99. Such a short T cannot be achieved with the existing single-photon detectors without the additional use of a time gate. The current highest intrinsic resolution, obtained in superconducting nanowire-based single-photon detectors, is about 60 ps [H. Takesue, Nature Photon. NPAHBY 1749-4885 10.1038/nphoton.2007.75 1, 343 (2007)].

    • note
    • In practice, the signal photons will experience an additional loss (< 1 dB [30]) passing through the switch. As a result, the total detection efficiency for the signal photons will be reduced somewhat (not less than 4 % from the assumed value of 5 %). In effect, this will lead to at most a 20 % reduction in the production rate for the heralded photons. The heralding efficiency, on the other hand, will not be affected because the switch induces no measurable degradation in the switched photon's purity [30].
