note
-
Kruzynski says clams make up a major component of the seafood-based diet among certain British Columbia First Nations communities. Although clams are low accumulators of cadmium, these traditional resources are frequently denied due to closures for coliform contamination and seasonally due to hazards related to toxic algae. Mussels and other shellfish also are important but have a much lower tendency to accumulate cadmium. Aquaculture efforts are centered mainly around oysters, mussels, and native scallops (which often are eaten whole; in contrast, the adductor muscle-a portion of the animal that is low in cadmium-typically is the only part eaten of the Japanese cultured scallop).
