This influential meta-analysis reviewed the existent evidence for neuroanatomic abnormalities in bipolar disorder, reporting lateral ventricle enlargement and increased rates of deep white matter hyperintensities in the illness. This landmark study is the first large-scale study of the impact of neurocognition on real world functioning and disability in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Although there was greater disability in schizophrenia, neurocognition predicted worse functioning in all outcome domains in both disorders, suggesting a role for neurocognition in the disability of both illnesses.

We examined cognitive functioning in a large sample of bipolar pedigrees and found three cognitive measures that are genetically correlated with the illness. These findings suggest that neurocognitive measures are strong candidates for endophenotypes for bipolar disorder, as common genetic factors influence risk of the disorder and neuropsychological performance.
