During each sample handling protocol we vary the amplitude (stress or acceleration) in a triangular ram Therefore, during the low stress amplitude compaction we apply a static stress of 0.24 MPa, then we cycle at 5 stress amplitudes (in MPa) in the following order: 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.08, 0.04. Similarly for the high stress amplitude protocol we apply a static stress of 0.5 MPa, then the amplitudes (in MPa) are varied in the following order: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0. Finally, for the vibration protocol, we place a 93 g mass on the tosurface of the granular medium, then the acceleration amplitudes are varied in the following order: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5.
