Development and efficacy of an intervention to enhance readiness for adherence among adults who had previously failed HIV treatment
-
10.1089/apc.2008.0170 19866535 This an intriguing study in that it used an intervention on 28 patients who had failed at least four previous regimens. The intervention was either six or 12 sessions to help patients become "ready" to resume HAART (readiness was not defined or measured). Fourteen of these patients had undetectable viral loads at 3 months, and 11 had undetectable viral loads at 12 months.

Development and validation of the HIV medication readiness scale
-
10.1177/1073191107304295 17986658 This study tested a 10-item HIV readiness scale that was found to be predictive of adherence after 1 month of treatment. The short follow-up and the use of two measures of self-report to define adherence raise caution flags. However, it is an approach that should be replicated in patients who will be followed for a longer period of time.

Patient readiness to adhere to HAART
-
10.1177/1545109709351240 This study demonstrated that asking patients if they think they are ready has no predictive value at all. It did not matter whether patients were naïve to HAART or restarting after a greater than 6 month "drug holiday." It suggests that future studies along this line are likely to be futile.

Placebo practice trials: A tool to assess and improve adherence readiness
-
10.1310/XGXU-FUDK-A9QT-MPTF 12501131 In this study, 20 patients took placebos for a 2-week trial and were monitored by electronic devices until they showed that they could adhere at >90%. This took up to five trials for some patients. Of the 15 patients who achieved "readiness," 87% achieved >90% adherence.

HIV Clin Trials 4 269 281 10.1310/YVTR-T8EV-3TQ6-QAJC 12916013 This was a follow-up trial using the methods from reference 36. A total of 201 patients, most with a history of substance abuse, were enrolled and 181 completed at least one trial. Eighty-three patients started HAART and only 33 achieved >90% adherence during a 2-week follow-up period. (Pubitemid 36974717)
