Monte Carlo results suggest a critical coupling in the range of expected values in suspended samples (Ref.), which is smaller than the value predicted by our variational ansatz. The origin of this discrepancy is unclear. It could arise from differences in the regularization of the short-range part of the interaction or in the treatment of screening at high frequencies.
