10. The statistics for the population in 2005 are compiled and calculated from Badan Pusat Statistik, Penduduk dan Kependudukan Aceh Pasca Gempa and Tsunami. 11. The estimation is carried out using the following steps. First, the annual population growth rate in 1990-2000 is assumed to continue in 2000-05.
12. Then, this growth rate is used to calculate the number of population in 2005 if there had been no tsunami/earthquake. Because the actual population growth rate tends to decline, the assumed growth rate in 2000-05 is the maximum one.
13. Therefore, the difference (loss) of population, calculated by comparing the estimated and the "real" number of population in 2005, is the maximum number of tsunami-earthquake related deaths and out-migration
14. Second, the annual population growth rate is assumed to decline to a maximum 1.75 per cent in 2000-05. With this rate, the minimum number of tsunamiearthquake related deaths and outmigration is estimated.
