Transcellular trichome breakage involves the sacrifice of an intercalary cell converted to a necridium (dead cell); it occurs in filamentous cyanobacteria in which transverse wall formation is restricted to ingrowth of the peptidoglycan layer, which is not accompanied by ingrowth of the outer membrane. 106. False branching occurs as a consequence of trichome breakage of ensheathed cyanobacteria; subsequent elongation of the trichomal fragments may lead to the perforation of the sheath envelope at the breakpoints and bring them into an angular apposition to the primary trichome, thus suggesting (incorrectly) that a branch has been formed.
107. Motility and the formation of polar gas vacuoles have been observed to be easily lost by spontaneous mutation; strains that do not exhibit these features, but comply otherwise to the description of Pseudanabaena as defined here, are best included in LPP group B, until their affiliation to Pseudanabaena has been demonstrated by additional criteria.
108. Motility and gas vacuolation may be lost due to spontaneous mutation; if this is the case, affiliation to this group needs to be confirmed by genetic analysis.
