inaugural lecture, University of Sheffield, 5 May . Professor Flinders lecture was delivered 2 months after mine, and I have taken up some of his ideas in the revised version of my lecture printed here. In particular, I have added a new third challenge on voter expectations (renumbering the remaining challenges in my original lecture). We have taken different approaches to the broader issue of the role of politicians, but with some exceptions, we adopt the same broad viewpoint. The battlefield is no longer so lonely

Many of the political scientists who do bridge the gap are valued friends of the Hansard Society. It would be invidious to single any individual out apart from David Butler, my predecessor but one in chairing the Society, who, over more than 60 years, made it his mission to get to know and understand active politicians and to bring them into contact with his students
