    • Note on the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Compilation of the 10-volume First Edition of the OED was started in 1878 and finished in 1928. Its compilers acknowledged from the beginning that people who were not professional lexicographers or philologists could make legitimate contributions by identifying words in print with a specific or a changed meaning, and submitting their findings to the Dictionary staff. Among the most prolific contributors to the First Edition was a former American Civil War Union Army surgeon who, after killing a man in the UK, was imprisoned for life in Broadmoor Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He made his many contributions from his prison cell. The Second Edition of the OED now has 20 volumes and six compilations of addenda as the English language continues to grow
