Relationship between cardiovascular risk as predicted by established risk scores versus plaque progression as measured by serial intravascular ultrasound in left main coronary arteries. Circulation 2004;110:1579-85. This important IVUS study showed that the rate of plaque growth in the left main coronary artery correlates with traditional risk factors. In addition, the 18 patients who experienced cardiovascular events during follow-up had a significantly greater annual plaque progression by IVUS than asymptomatic patients.

This groundbreaking study was the first clinical trial to suggest high pressure final balloon dilatation with IVUS guidance could provide adequate stent expansion and that anticoagulation therapy could be safely omitted.

This multicentre study evaluated whether routine ultrasound guidance of stent implantation improved clinical outcome as compared with angiographic guidance alone. Impact of intravascular ultrasound-guided stenting on long-term clinical outcome: a metaanalysis of available studies comparing intravascular ultrasoundguided and angiographically guided stenting. Catheter Cardiovasc Interv 2003;59:314-21. This important meta-analysis demonstrated that IVUS guided stent implantation has a neutral effect on long term death and non-fatal myocardial infarction compared to an angiographic optimisation. However, it also demonstrated that IVUS guided stenting significantly lowers 6 month angiographic restenosis and target vessel revascularisations. (Pubitemid 36792388)
20. Hassan AK, Bergheanu SC, Stijnen T, et al. Late stent malapposition risk is higher after drug-eluting stent compared with bare-metal stent implantation and associates with late stent thrombosis. Eur Heart J 2010;31:1172-80. This important meta-analysis demonstrated that late acquired stent malapposition in patients with drug eluting stents was four times higher compared with bare metal stents, suggesting that late stent malapposition may play a role in patients who develop late stent thrombosis.
