However, if one increases the potential the current will be less and the energy transfer rate (IE) need not be reduced. For this reason, modern grids use higher potentials of transfer, about 100,000 V, and thus the heat loss is reduced and electricity can be sent about much further by the use of copper cables than had previously been the case.
