All attempts to carry out the cycloaddition reactions were performed as follows: under dry argon, a solution of cx-oxo ketene 12 (0.5 mmol) in hexane (3 mL) was treated with the dienophile (1 equiv.), and the mixture was stirred, for 9 h at room temp. Analysis of the reaction mixture showed no products, but the starting a-oxo ketene unmodified.
