James Maxton was 'one of the most charismatic figures in twentieth century British public life'. He became a member of the ILP in 1904 and served as its chairman 1913-19. In 1922 he became MP for the Glasgow constituency of Bridgeton. He was a left-leaning politician who sought to push the mainstream Labour Party away from its policy of 'gradu- alism'. This resulted in a gulf between Maxton and the moderate Labour leadership that widened throughout the 1920s. In 1932 he was one of the main advocates for ILP disaffiliation from the Labour Party. Maxton has become something of a Scottish socialist folk-hero, Oxford
