    • Presumably Mallalieu did not know that in nearby Sheffield, and in other towns, the capitalist Billy Butlin had been called in to advise local authorities on organizing Holidays at Home, a task he characteristically combined with the private purchase of a cut-price 'Switchback' ride (C. • The Times, 25 June 1942. Holidays at Home formed only one part of CEMA's mission to bring the arts to village halls, schools, factory canteens and other venues. Its officials promoted opera, piano recitals and minority performing arts such as marionettes. They were less keen on brass bands or the Roger Quilter musical Love at the Inn which they thought derivative and not 'serious' (V & A archive, EL 3/28).

There was also dissent about proceeds of a Holidays at Home cricket match which the author wanted to go towards the upkeep of the park; other organizers favoured the Red Cross and other charities. My attention was drawn to this book by the author's daughter, Mrs Ann Revill.
