    • Note
    • The author is conscious of the role that transhipment ports as well as small and medium-sized regional and local ports play in the European port system and the effect these ports have on the larger multi-purpose gateway ports. The latter, however, represent the full spectrum of operational, spatial and societal port governance issues and problems that exist and are therefore most suited for in-depth analysis.

    • Note
    • The focus of the author's empirical research is primarily on European seaports given the particular characteristics of the supra-national governance level set by the EU. To have a full validation, the conceptual framework developed in this article can, however in a later stage, be easily applied to ports in elsewhere in the world as well.
