Contemporary assessment of the disease burden of sinusitis
-
10.2500/ajra.2009.23.3355 19671253 This is an important article that refreshes the information on the disease burden of sinusitis in the United States. The authors show that sinusitis is more prevalent than hay fever, peptic ulcer disease, and chronic bronchitis. Patients with sinusitis were much more likely to visit the emergency department, spend more than $500 per year on health care, and see a medical specialist than those without sinusitis. Work days lost due to sinusitis were similar to those of acute asthma

This article covers acute rhinosinusitis and CRS with respect to diagnosis. Very nice evidence-based summaries of imaging in acute rhinosinusitis and CRS are presented. Do anxiety and depression confound symptom reporting and diagnostic accuracy in chronic rhinosinusitis?
-
N Bhattacharyya A Wasan 2008 Do anxiety and depression confound symptom reporting and diagnostic accuracy in chronic rhinosinusitis? Ann Otol Rhinol Laryngol 117 18 23 18254366 Clinicians are often faced with separating symptom amplification from symptoms that truly reflect underlying CRS. This article nicely shows that use of existing diagnostic guidelines is not hampered by symptom amplification. In other words, cardinal symptoms of CRS still predict true radiographic CRS, even in the face of psychiatric comorbidities (Pubitemid 351219752)

An assessment of sinonasal anatomic variants potentially associated with recurrent acute rhinosinusitis
-
Feb 3 (Epub ahead of print)
-
Alkire BC, Bhattacharyya N: An assessment of sinonasal anatomic variants potentially associated with recurrent acute rhinosinusitis. Laryngoscope 2010 Feb 3 (Epub ahead of print). This was the first article to examine RARS with respect to potential underlying anatomic etiologies. The authors use CT scan to identify anatomic abnormalities-such as septal deviation, concha bullosa, and Haller cells-that may predispose to RARS. They found that only Haller cells were implicated in this diagnosis.
