1. Ecuador's military high command did not plan or carry out the coup that deposed President Jamil Mahuad in 2000. The Ecuadoran civilian leader was overthrown by dissident officers led by Colonel Lucio Gutiérrez and opposition indigenous groups. The military leadership later assumed control and jailed Gutiérrez.
